IT HAS been eight years in the making but sounds vintage: AC/DC have blasted back into action with new single Rock ‘N’ Roll Train.

A few hundred lucky fans have had the song reverberating in their heads for almost two weeks after winning the chance to star in the video clip filmed in London on August 15.

Since then many have attempted to recreate the song from memory with hilarious results, posting their efforts on YouTube.

[…]

It is the lead single from the upcoming album Black Ice which is released on October 18.

AC/DC recorded the 15 tracks for the much-anticipated album in Vancouver earlier this year with producer Brendan O’Brien, who has worked with Pearl Jam, Rage Against The Machine and Bruce Springsteen.

The CD will be available in three different colour versions with their logo in red, gold or platinum.

AC/DC are expected to embark on an 18-month world tour in October but there has been no indication yet when they will bring it back home.

There’s been an upsurge in ASCII spam in the last week…It’s quite effective in getting through filters,” said Chris Boyd, director of malware research at messaging management firm FaceTime Communications.

But earlier efforts to use ASCII art for spam have proven to be duds, he added. “The downside is that 9 times out of 10, it’s completely useless because it’s almost impossible to read, or it’s a really bizarre picture of a naked lady that’s not clickable,” Boyd said.

Evasive maneuvers

Spam filters can detect the word “Viagra” and suspect Web addresses of sites trying to get rich quick by catering to the demand for the drug. But it’s another thing altogether to detect an ASCII art version of the same word. Indeed, an ASCII art spam e-mail reading “Viagra-$1.15” and “Cialis-$1.99” made it past the spam filters of my Yahoo Mail and Gmail accounts.

Google declined to comment specifically on ASCII art spam. “We expect spammers to use every means possible to try to send spam. That’s why we have a very robust spam-fighting effort at Google,” the company said in a statement. Yahoo didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Here’s why it’s clever. One line of the e-mail is “78 46 60 11 04 75 300 38 0348 18 61 55171″–gibberish that hardly resembles part of the word “Viagra” or a suspect URL. But reading it on my screen as part of the overall text, its meaning was clear to me in a flash. And a spam generation program could evade spam filter fingerprinting by randomly substituting other numbers into the text art.

We all have to admit it, this year’s Olympic opening ceremony was of epic proportions… but there was only one thing that wasn’t so epic.

Right at the moment when Chinese gymnast Li Ning was flying to light up the giant Olympic torch, someone took this picture. And if you think that this was Photoshopped, other people were able to take the shot from other angles.

Jessica B.

Yahoo! Answers.

Susan Gurley, executive director of the Alexandria, Va.-based ACTE, said that international travelers need to be aware of and prepared for such border searches, even though they are relatively rare. This is especially true because so far little is known about the DHS’s policies relating to the practice and what it does with the information collected during searches of electronic devices, she said.

“We think people should know that they basically are leaving their right to privacy at the door when they cross the U.S. border. There is no assumption of privacy [at a port of entry].”
said Gurley.

“This is by far not an epidemic of any sort,” Gurley said. “But we think people should know that they basically are leaving their right to privacy at the door when they cross the U.S. border. There is no assumption of privacy,” at a port of entry, she said.

Here are five factors Gurley says travelers should know about:

1. No evidence needed to take your laptop

Border agents do not need any evidence or suspicion of illegal activity to examine a laptop or other electronic device.

Every time you cross the border, customs officials have the right to look at anything in your possession, including the content on your laptop, handheld device, cell phone, USB memory stick and digital cameras, Gurley said. They have the right to both view that information and to download or mirror it if they think it’s necessary, she said.

2. Anything can be searched

Everything on an electronic device is open to search. This includes personal photographs, personal banking, any business documents and stored or unopened e-mail, Gurley said.

3. Your PC might not be returned right away

Seized devices may be kept for an indefinite period of time. Carry only a laptop or electronic device you can afford to lose or hand over for an unspecified period of time.

Sensitive data should be sent by e-mail before crossing the border in case the data becomes unavailable if the device is seized, she said.

4. Don’t take anything you don’t want to share

Don’t carry anything on these devices that could potentially embarrass you or that you don’t want others to see, Gurley said.

If it’s information you don’t want to share, don’t carry it. That includes data such as personal banking information, photos, correspondence, health and password information. If the device is a company-owned computer, don’t carry proprietary business information or personnel records on it, the ACTE advised.

5. Be cooperative

Cooperate with customs officials. Ask for a receipt and a badge number if your computer is seized. Try and get whatever information you can on the reason why it was seized.

cowboy-bebop.jpg

All your Faye Valentine fantasies are finally going to come true… if you have any at least! Following Akira and Ghost in the Shell announcements, apparently Cowboy Bebop is in for a live-action adaptation as well.

IF Magazine talked with veteran producer Erwin Stoff (via AICN) and discovered that he’s working on making a live-action Cowboy Bebop movie with Fox. Apparently it’s very fresh news: “I’m really excited to be working on it, and it’s in the really early stages. We just signed it the other day.” If you’re not so familiar with Bebop, it’s an incredibly popular Japanese anime TV series that first aired back in 1998 and has become a hit here in the US as well as Japan. I’m not exactly a big fan myself, but considering Hollywood is caught up in the anime trend, I’m definitely excited to see this one come to life as well.

Stoff goes on to explain his enthusiasm for the project and their attempts to remain faithful. “I have such an enormous admiration for its creators, that our first and foremost concern is going to be a real degree of faithfulness to the tone of the movie, to the mix of genres, and so on and so forth. When I met with them in Japan, one of the first things that I brought up was the experience that we had on A Scanner Darkly, and how hard we worked to remain faithful to Philip K. Dick, and that was our big concern here.” Don’t get confused, this does not mean that they’re going for a similar animated look like A Scanner Darkly, as he explicitly said that it’s going to be live-action. And if you’re wondering who Faye Valentine is, she’s one of the main character’s in the series and a fan favorite. The photo to the right comes from Bam Kapow’s gallery of Faye Valentine costumes.

The show first aired in Japan in early 1998 and was brought over to America in 2001 on Adult Swim. The series follows the adventures of a group of bounty hunters traveling on their spaceship, the Bebop, in the year 2071. Sony released a full-length animated film titled Cowboy Bebop: Knockin’ on Heavens Door in 2001 where it was greeted with immense praise from fans worldwide. It is easily one of the most popular mainstream anime series and is beloved by many people even if they’re not hardcore anime fans.

The “spam king” was sentenced on Tuesday to 47 months in prison, with a ruling that the court hopes sends a message to other online criminals.

Robert Soloway, the man known as the spam king for the massive volume of spam he sent out, pleaded guilty to fraud, spamming and tax evasion after being indicted in May 2007. After an unusually long sentencing hearing lasting two-and-a-half days, Judge Marsha Pechman handed down her sentence in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington in Seattle.

[…]

The prosecution argued that Soloway should get more prison time than any of the previous spammers, asking for a sentence of seven to nine years. “None of those cases, not one, comes close to this case in terms of the duration of the maliciousness, the harassment techniques, the high level of spamming activity that we have in this case,” said assistant U.S. attorney Kathryn Warma.

However, compared with some other notorious spammers, Soloway deserved some leniency, his attorneys said. Soloway didn’t damage anyone’s computer, he didn’t send out malicious code, and he never directed people to pornography, as some spammers have done, his lawyer Richard Troberman said. Jaynes, for example, had millions of AOL e-mail addresses that were stolen from the ISP (Internet service provider), and he was earning as much as US$700,000 a month from his activities, Troberman said. By comparison, the government figured conservatively that Soloway earned more than $700,000 in three years.

[…]

Soloway apologized to the judge and to his family, admitting that his actions were wrong. “There is no one else to blame but myself,” he said, before the judge handed down her sentence.

Soloway has apologized for his activities before. After he was investigated in 1999 in California for spamming activities, he told detectives that he was sorry and learned a lot, Warma said. “He then moved on to another state and immediately engaged in the same behavior,” she said.

It has been more typical for Soloway to boast about his techniques than to apologize for them. In online forums he would brag that he would never have to pay the millions of dollars the civil courts ordered him to pay.

He claims he lived in a modest household growing up but went to school with kids who were wealthier. He didn’t have friends and always figured that if he earned a lot of money, people would like him, he said. “The only time people ever talked to me was when I made money or spent it,” he said. “It was completely wrong. I’m very embarrassed and ashamed.”

Microsoft attorney Aaron Kornblum attended the hearing and said he was pleased with the results. “Soloway repeatedly broke the law. He defied a federal judge and he made a lot of money. This sends a strong message.”

Soloway was one of the first spammers Microsoft sued when, in 2003, the company decided it was time to try to put a stop to spam using legal means. At the time, Soloway was known as the third-most-prolific spammer in the world, Kornblum said.

In addition to the prison term, Soloway will serve three years of probation and must do 200 hours of community service.

By eliminating the captchas we simplified the use of RapidShare’s free services significantly. In addition, free-users can now upload and download bigger files (up to 200 megabyte). Anyhow, to protect RapidShare from congestion caused by automated downloading, we limited the maximum download speed for free‐users to 500 kilobit per second. To compensate for that, they do not have to wait anymore until starting a succeeding download.

Premium-users now profit from more flexibility regarding the download volume: It used to be limited to 10 gigabyte per day and can be “saved” now to a maximum of 50 Gigabyte. As a consequence, the volume that was not used is transferred to the following day automatically, up to a maximum of 50 gigabyte. If the complete download capacity is used up during one day, the premium-user is able to save another 10 gigabyte the following day.
