“There’s been an upsurge in ASCII spam in the last week…It’s quite effective in getting through filters,” said Chris Boyd, director of malware research at messaging management firm FaceTime Communications.

But earlier efforts to use ASCII art for spam have proven to be duds, he added. “The downside is that 9 times out of 10, it’s completely useless because it’s almost impossible to read, or it’s a really bizarre picture of a naked lady that’s not clickable,” Boyd said.

Evasive maneuvers

Spam filters can detect the word “Viagra” and suspect Web addresses of sites trying to get rich quick by catering to the demand for the drug. But it’s another thing altogether to detect an ASCII art version of the same word. Indeed, an ASCII art spam e-mail reading “Viagra-$1.15” and “Cialis-$1.99” made it past the spam filters of my Yahoo Mail and Gmail accounts.

Google declined to comment specifically on ASCII art spam. “We expect spammers to use every means possible to try to send spam. That’s why we have a very robust spam-fighting effort at Google,” the company said in a statement. Yahoo didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Here’s why it’s clever. One line of the e-mail is “78 46 60 11 04 75 300 38 0348 18 61 55171″–gibberish that hardly resembles part of the word “Viagra” or a suspect URL. But reading it on my screen as part of the overall text, its meaning was clear to me in a flash. And a spam generation program could evade spam filter fingerprinting by randomly substituting other numbers into the text art.

Долго не мог понять, почему Firefox виснет или вообще crash-иться, когда я пытался зайти на Gmail с работы.. Сначала думал, что это из-за того что все на работе сидят тоже в интернете и сжирают трафик, т.к. под вечер, когда никого практически нет, Gmail еще более менее шустро грузился, да и из дома тоже нормально заходил…

А сегодня решил таки поискать в чем же все таки проблема на самом деле, ведь у Gmail-а врядли такие уж слабенькие серваки, что надо супер-дупер быстрое подключение, чтобы без проблем заходить. Среди большого количества постов на эту тему, ответом стал вот этот вот вопрос и комментарии к нему.

Оказалось, что дело все в Add-On-ах, нужных мне для работы (duh!)… По поводу Firebug-а, что он замедляет Gmail, знал уже давно - в Gmail-е есть детектор включенного Firebug-a, который собственно и сообщает, что Firebug лучше отключить. Кроме Firebug-a, отключить (или заблокировать для “mail.google.com”) стоит HTML Validator и Web Developer.. Короче, все что обрабатывает source код стоит отключить или заблокировать, но не исключенно, что и другие какие-то Add-On-ы тоже “не дружат” с Gmail-ом…

В “Safe Mode” с отключенными всеми Add-On-ами практически моментально загружаеться.

Правда, это полностью не исправило проблему и все равно время от времени Firefox зависает, когда захожу на Gmail… Приходиться использовать “Basic HTML”…

Будем надеяться, что с выпуском Firefox 3, который кстати состоится 17-го Июня, Gmail-ом можно будет нормально пользоваться… Хотя, думаю, что можно будет, т.к. наверно больше половины Add-On-ов еще не обновлены для третьей версией.. Да, кстати если надо, то Firefox 3 Release Candidate 3 можно уже скачать.. О переходе на Opera я уже даже и не думаю, т.к. недавно выпущенная Opera 9.50, хоть и быстрей и даже слегка “умней” в отношении отображения сайтов, стала уродской какой-то…

Spammers, fresh from the success of cracking the Windows Live captcha used by Hotmail, have broken the equivalent system at Gmail.

Internet security firm Websense reports that miscreants have created bots which are capable of signing up and creating random Gmail accounts for spamming purposes, defeating Captcha-based defences in the process. It reckons the same group of spammers are behind both attacks.

Captcha (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart) challenge-response systems, which are used to prevent accounts being created until a user correctly identifies letters in an image, are designed to ensure requests are made by a human rather than an automated program. The technique has been used to defeat automatic sign-ups to email accounts by services including Yahoo! Mail and Gmail for years, and hackers are increasingly successful in defeating the approach. For example, the HotLan Trojan has created more than 500,000 spam email accounts with Hotmail, Yahoo! and Gmail since its arrival back in July 2007.

Websense reckons the latest Gmail Captcha hack is the most sophisticated it has seen to date. Unlike Live Mail Captcha breaking, which involved just one zombie host doing the entire job, the Gmail breaking process involves two compromised hosts. Each of the two compromised hosts applies a slightly different technique to analysing Captcha, as explained in a posting by Websense.

Even using the two techniques, only one in every five Captcha-breaking requests are successful. It’s a fairly low percentage, but one that’s still more than workable in the case of automated attacks.

It sounds like a lot of effort, but gaining a working Gmail account has a number of advantages for spammers. As well as gaining access to Google’s services in general, spammers gain a address whose domain is highly unlikely to be blacklisted, helping them defeat one aspect of anti-spam defences. Gmail also has the benefit of being free to use.

A wide range of Captcha-breaking services are hosted on a domain located in the US, Websense reports. The page includes a support page and payment advice along with an internal test page.

In Gmail every built-in view (e.g.: inbox, trash, read mail) is actually a label. So if you want to view all the unread messages from the inbox, you could search for: label:inbox label:unread.

You can combine these built-in labels with your labels and create interesting queries. But these queries can become long and hard to write. Fortunately, you can replace “label” with “l” and everything with still work fine. The previous query will become: l:inbox l:unread.

If you still think the query is too long, Gmail has shortcuts for the special labels.

^b - chats
^f - sent mail
^i - inbox
^k - trash
^r - draft
^s - spam
^t - starred messages
^u - unread mail

That means our query could become: l:^i l:^u.

What about all the unread messages that aren’t in the inbox? Search for: -l:^i l:^u.

Жирная бесючая ссылка Spam(XXX) уберается и на место её ставиться обычная: Spam. Глаза не мозолит и не раздражает, что спамеры тебе всякую хреномуть шлют.

Самые популярные модификации для Gmail, собранные в одном add-on-е, такие как: Attachment Icons, Conversation Preview, Spam Count & Invites Hide и т.д.

Конечно же это все можно по отдельности поставить при помощи таких add-on-ов, как Stylish и Greasemonkey, но так по моему удобней.
