I normally don’t do this sorta thing because I’m not that great at drawing real people.. but George Carlin was a big influence on my life and I guess I owe it to him to make the effort.

George Carlin, an irreverent US comedian who was once arrested for offensive language after a performance of his cult routine “Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television”, has died in California of heart failure. He was 71.
Carlin was admitted to a Santa Monica hospital yesterday complaining of chest pain and died last evening, said his publicist, Jeff Abraham. He had a history of heart trouble and drug dependency.
He had performed as recently as last weekend at the Orleans Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas. The previous week it was announced that he was to be awarded the 11th annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humour.
Carlin constantly pushed the envelope with his jokes, particularly with his most celebrated and controversial routine. When he uttered all seven words during a show in Milwaukee in 1972, he was arrested for disturbing the peace. When they were played on a New York radio station, they resulted in a Supreme Court ruling in 1978 upholding the government’s power to punish stations for broadcasting offensive language.
“So my name is a footnote in American legal history, which I’m perversely kind of proud of,” he said earlier this year.

Во Франции, где предустановленное ПО считается противозаконным и сборщики ПК обязаны возмещать покупателям стоимость невостребованных лицензий, суд поддержал иск приверженца свободного ПО к компании Asus. Две правозащитные организации, объединяющие сторонников СПО, назвали решение суда победой над незаконной установкой Windows XP на новые компьютеры.
Французский приверженец свободного ПО из города Кан на севере Франции приобрел компьютер Asus с предустановленной Windows XP. Компьютер ему был нужен, а вот XP — нет. Покупатель обратился к Asus с просьбой «снести» ОС от Microsoft. Одной денежной компенсации за ее установку ему было недостаточно. Но в Asus клиенту ответили, что удаление ОС будет стоить дороже суммы компенсации — около €130 (примерно $200).
Суд постановил, что такая невыгодная для клиента компенсация не компенсирует нанесенный ему ущерб, и предписал вендорам упростить процесс удаления программ на своих компьютерах. В итоге истец из Кана получит от Asus компенсацию и ПК уже без Windows XP. В своем решении суд руководствовался французским Кодексом потребителя.
AFUL и April, две французские общественные организации, объединяющие приверженцев свободного ПО, назвали решение суда настоящей победой. Как говорится в их совместном заявлении, покупатели новых машин все чаще отказываются от MS Vista в пользу XP, и сборщики ПК, например, HP и Dell, идут навстречу спросу, предустанавливая на свои ПК именно эту ОС. Microsoft же все равно получает свои лицензионные отчисления за Vista. И лишь покупатель теряет в этом случае свои деньги, получая ПО, которым не собирается пользоваться.
Впрочем, не все так плохо на французском потребительском рынке, замечают правозащитники. Теперь, с появлением EeePC от Asustek и Aspire One (которые, как отмечают в ассоциациях, очень хорошо были восприняты общественностью), альтернатива продуктам Microsoft для простых пользователей реально существует. Вообще же правозащитники предлагают всем сборщикам ПК предустанавливать на машины несколько альтернативных ОС, а затем активировать лишь одну из них по выбору покупателя.

After the demise of Stage 6 and the disappearance of its unofficial successor Vreel it became apparent that it is difficulty to run a profitable video streaming portal. Veoh seems to be the next company that is realizing that providing a service to a worldwide audience can have a negative impact on bandwidth costs and advertising revenues. This might have been the reason why they decided to block access to Veoh to all but 33 countries.
NewTeeVee has a list of countries that are blocked currently taken from the Wikipedia entry. If you do the math you notice that many countries are still missing on that list. If you sum it up you could say that access is blocked for most countries in Africa, Central and South America, Eastern Europe and Asia.
The first reason that was given to the public was that access was blocked due to a low concentration of users in those countries. According to official sources all blocked countries accounted for 10% of the Veoh user base. It probably makes sense from a business point of view to concentrate on markets that provide a large enough user base to be attractive to advertisers but the way the news was transmitted to the user base was rather unprofessional.

В результате, сейчас мы мало знаем о возможностях новой ОС.

Корейские инженеры разработали новый стандарт записи цифровой музыки – MT9, который в будущем может заменить популярный MP3 благодаря одному очень важному свойству: возможности отдельно отключать каждый из шести составляющих трек каналов, будь это голос, звук гитары или, например, барабана. Новый формат уже впечатлил экспертную группу, и его принятие в качестве международного стандарта ожидается в июне 2008 г.
Разработчики из корейского научно-исследовательского института электроники и телекоммуникаций (Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute — ETRI) создали новый аудиоформат, который может прийти на замену популярного MP3, сообщает The Korea Times.
Разработанный ETRI формат MT9 позволяет разделять композицию на шесть различных аудиоканалов — каждый для отдельного инструмента или голоса (вокал, хор, пианино, гитара, бас и барабан). Таким образом, пользователи могут регулировать громкость каждого канала в отдельности. Так, к примеру, любители караоке смогут просто отключить голос и получить готовую фонограмму, и наоборот — отключив все каналы, помимо голоса, можно получить чистый вокал.
